SOCKEYE/KOKANEE (Oncorhynchus nerka)

  • adipose fin present
  • the length of the base of the anal fin is greater than the length of the base of the dorsal fin (back of anal fin is angled, or slanted back)
  • parr marks are oval shaped
  • parr marks are dark coloured over lighter coloured side of fish (dark on light background)
  • parr marks are slightly irregular in shape and position (half below lateral line and half above lateral line
  • height of parr marks is less than the vertical diameter of the eye
  • width of parr marks is less than the light areas between each parr mark

Known distribution in Yukon: sockeye-Alsek River, kokanee-Kathleen and Fredrick Lakes.

Other notable comments and clues:

  • The most distinguishing feature of the juvenile sockeye or kokanee is their distribution. There are only a few river and lakes that sockeye and kokanee exist in Yukon. Kokanee are only found in Kathleen and Fredrick lakes and sockeye are found only in the Alsek River.
