SLIMY SCULPIN (Cottus cognatus)

  • no adipose fin present
  • dorsal fins
  • second dorsal fin (close to caudal fin) is spined
  • caudal (tail) fin is rounded
  • large pectoral fins that look fanned
  • pectoral and pelvic fins very close together (near front of body)
  • anal fin is large and spined
  • anterior of body rounded
  • posterior of body strongly compressed

Known distribution: throughout the Yukon Territory.

Other notable comments and clues:

  • The most distinguishing feature of the juvenile slimy sculpin is the spiny and “fan-like” fins.
  • Sizes of 100mm are considered maximum (not very big fish as adults).
