ROUND WHITEFISH (Prosopium cylindraceum)

  • adipose fin is present
  • large round “false” parr marks present along lateral line
  • additional longitudinal rows of black spots on sides above lateral line
  • upper jaw overhangs lower jaw (forming a snout, and “over-bite”)
  • snout is pointed when viewed downwards from above

Known distribution: throughout the Yukon Territory.

Other notable comments and clues:

  • The most distinguishing feature of juvenile round whitefish is they lose their “false” parr marks by the time they grow to approx 100mm in length, compared to the pygmy whitefish that keep their “false” parr marks.
  • Body “deeper” in length in the area ahead of the dorsal fin, while pygmy whitefish are more round in cross-section and torpedo-shaped.
  • Very hard to differentiate between round and pygmy whitefish at sizes smaller than 100mm.
  • Can be very easily mistaken or confused with juvenile pygmy whitefish.
  • Separate from pygmy whitefish by eye diameter less than <30% of
the head length (smaller looking eye) and head length is less than <16% of the total length (smaller looking head). Snout pinched as seen from above.
