PIGMY WHITEFISH (Catostomus commersoni)

  • adipose fin is present
  • “false” parr marks are present along lateral line
  • upper jaw overhangs lower jaw (forming a snout and “under-bite”)
  • snout is “pinched” looking when viewed downwards from above

 

Liard River system (Mackenzie R. system), Upper Yukon River system (i.e. Teslin R.) and Alsek River systems.

Other notable comments and clues:

  • The most distinguishing feature of the juvenile pygmy whitefish is
    they do not lose their “false” parr marks at 100mm in length, however these “false” parr my be very faint.
  • Body torpedo-shaped and quite round in cross-section.
  • Can be very easily mistaken or confused with juvenile round whitefish.
  • Sizes of 100-120mm are considered adults (not very big fish as adults).
  • Separate from round whitefish by eye diameter is greater than >30% of the head length (bigger looking eye) and head length greater than >16% of the total length (bigger looking head). Snout broadly rounded as seen from above.
