NORTHERN PIKE (Esox lucius)

  • no adipose fin present
  • origin of dorsal fin is directly above origin of anal fin
  • large “duckbilled” mouth
  • lower jaw extends slightly beyond upper jaw (slight “under-bite”)
  • caudal (tail) fin is slightly forked
  • quite a large head

Known distribution: throughout the territory.

Other notable comments and clues:

  • The most distinguishing features of the juvenile northern pike are the large “duckbilled” mouth, as well as the base of the dorsal fin being directly above the base of the anal fin. These two features are very distinct to the northern pike.
