CHUM SALMON (Oncorhynchus keta)

  • adipose fin present
  • the length at the base of the anal fin is greater than the length at the base of the dorsal fin (anal fin on an angle, slanted back)
  • parr marks are small and oval shaped
  • parr marks are dark coloured over lighter coloured side of fish (dark on light background)
  • the height of the parr marks is less than the vertical diameter of the eye
  • parr marks regular in shape and positioned regularly on the fish (they may be faint or absent below the lateral line)
  • width of, or space between each parr mark, is greater than the width of the parr marks themselves

Known distribution: Yukon River System, Mackenzie and Mackenzie River systems (upper Liard).

Other notable comments and clues:

  • Chum salmon hatch and head almost directly to the ocean, so it would be rare to find one over approx 50-55mm in length at any time in the Yukon.
  • Very silvery in colour and parr marks can be quite faint.
